"You can't stay here, we will destroy you" - my clinical educator
This is what my midwifery educator told me when I was working in a hospital as a student midwife. My response - "I know, that's why I'm going to be a privately practicing midwife."
She mean't it kindly, she was on my side, she knew I was different and would have the spirit beaten out of me if I stayed. I barely tolerated my student year, how would I last my whole career as a midwife! I knew I had to find another way, and I (very successfully!) did. With no hospital experience as a registered midwife I opened my midwifery business and knew I had to succeed.
Back then there was no insurance, no clinical governance and no rules other than those attached to my registration. I collected a birth kit built a website that cost my $6/month and started taking clients... on paper it shouldn't have worked. I was 24 years old with NO experience as a registered midwife... but it did work, and I know exactly why...
Because I relentlessly pursued a mentor and stuck close to her. She nurtured me and apprenticed me and showed me the ropes.
And that is what I want to do for you. After 18 years in private practice I have worked out what it takes to grow and sustain a profitable midwifery business, and I'm going to show it all to you.

Hi. I'm Dr Melanie Jackson
Also known as 'Melanie the Midwife', the host of The Great Birth Rebellion Podcast AND the famous PregNancy!
I'm on a mission to help Australian midwives thrive in private practice.
In this 2 hour live training I'm going to share with you the steps you need to take.
Your own private practice is possible. It's closer and easier to achieve than you might think. I know, because I have run mine for 18+ years and have helped over 150 other midwives through my mentorship.
But, it didn't happen by accident. I've always had a knack for business and a drive to provide the best midwifery care based on the evidence. I've had business coaching and mentors throughout my journey, and in this webinar I'm going to give you some of what you need to get started.
I want to help you become a privately practicing midwife. So register for my free webinar to see if private practice is for you
Midwives are already benefiting from what I know
The way that it was designed it truly removed all of the fear. It removed it in a way that you could go okay I understand that this is where I need to go I need to do this step first and then that's going to set me up for this next step. - Ineka
I am actually more present in my family's life in the mornings and in the evenings and going to bedtime and doing the after-school activities and weekends than what I was, even in part-time shift work in the hospital. - Ashlee
I have opened up my own clinic space where I offer bulk billing uh midwifery care for those choosing hospital birth and I'm taking on numbers of home birth. - Clare
I just love not suffering moral distress. Yeah. I just love my headspace. - Georgina
There has never been a better time in history to consider private practice
- As of 2024 women can self refer to our services
- There is an insurance product that covers the full scope of our work
- New medicare items make private midwifery care more accessible
- BUT the biggest thing, is that soon the insurance exemption will run out and any midwife who hasn't worked through endorsement and business establishment will not be able to attend women wanting private midwifery services
If you don't know what any of that means, DON'T WORRY, that's what the free webinar is for. I'll explain it all.
